Since the revolution of the Internet, most people have access to a wealth of information that they normally would have had to track down by visiting various offices and agencies, or may not have had access to at all. Now, thanks to various Internet sources, even the average citizen has access to many types of information from the comfort of their own home and computer.

Today, some information that was normally only made available to sources such as law enforcement is now available to more people due to Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) sources. OSINT includes any type of information, in any medium, that is not considered to be classified and that is available to the public for those who seek it. Sometimes, this may involve paying for access to some of the information, but it is still available online for those who are willing to pay. All of these developments have affected to role of the private investigator in modern times.

Most average citizens are not fully aware of the wealth of information that is available to them. This can be as easy as digging up information from someone who has carelessly posted something they shouldn’t have on social media sites for all to see, or may require much more digging around. The Internet has allowed the private investigator to gather more information a lot faster. This is beneficial to the client as well as to the investigator.
